Hon. William D. Allen, for many years a resident of Putnam County and for at least ten years a member of the board of county commissioners from the First district, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. J. W. Parrish, in Dania, Dade county last Sunday.
Mr. Allen was one of the pioneer residents of this county, a native of South Carolina. His home was at Fruitland. Some eight or ten years ago he went to the lower east coast to reside in order to be near his children. He had a son in business at Miami, and another son is Rev. W. S. Allen, a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at present residing at Titusville. His daughters are Mrs. Parrish and Mrs. W. J. Gautier, the latter of Miami. Many in the county will learn of Mr. Allen's death with profound sorrow. He was an aged man. (Palatka News Obituary dtd Friday, 11 Feb 1916.)

William served as a Private in Kellys Company South Carolina Light Artillary during the Civil War.

William enlisted at Coles Island on 10 March 1862 in Capt. I S Bamburg's Company A, 1st Infantry Regiment South Carolina Volunteers Jenkins Brigade

while a sharpshooter he was shot in the right arm breaking the bone and shot through his body

He was captured at the Fall of Richmond on 3 April 1865 was at Libby Prison

He was honorably paroled at the end of the war in Newport News, Virginia on 11 July 1865

He lived in Florida from 1 Jan 1880 on.
