Curtis Andrew Maxwell was the son of Gene and Callie Smith Maxwell of Gainsville, Georgia. He was the second of their twelve children. One of his siblings, Alva Maxwell, was regionally well known as vice-president of Citizens and Southern Bank.

He married Eva W. Dyal on October 4, 1916 and at some point they moved to Young Harris, Georgia. Their children were named Curtis Eugene Maxwell and William B. Maxwell. He later lived in Union Level, Virginia. He died back in Fulton County, Georgia.

According to census records, he was a teacher at a college and later at a public school. He is presumed to have been teaching at Young Harris College since there are so many family ties to the college and he lived in the area.
