Only son and child of Captain Issac Griffith (1782-1827), a veteran of the War of 1812, and his wife Catherine Elizabeth Boteler Griffith (1786-1836).

Lewis Griffith was orphaned at the age of 12 and may have been taken in by one of his half brothers or sisters. We do not have any information about Captain Issac's first wife and their family. At this time we do not know who may have taken him in

Lewis A.B. Griffith grew up in Frederick and/or Washington County Maryland, where he would meet and later marry Amanda Cordella Knode (1827-1898) on 15 MAY 1849 in Washington County, Maryland. Catherine Knode was the daughter of George and Catherine Braun (Germanic for Brown) Knode, the found family of Braunsville (later spelled as Brownsville), Maryland.

Lewis and Catherine Griffith would have eleven children; eight of whom would grow to adulthood and have children of their own. All of their children were born in Page County, Iowa.
Lewis Griffith died on 10 JAN 1900 in College Springs, Page County, Iowa and was buried at the Maple Hills Cemetery next to his beloved wife.
