Eliza Dessessaure Newell, wife of the Hon. Mason Irwin, judge of the superior court, died last evening at 6 o'clock, in this city, at the residence of her father, ex-Governor William A. Newell, of chronic intestinal disease, after a lingering, painful and wasting illness.

Mrs. Irwin was born in New Jersey, and was educated at some of the best institutions of learning in that state and Philadelphia. She held the office of territorial librarian here for six years, and all persons who came in contact with her officially will testify to the courteous and intelligent manner in which she discharged the duties of that postition.

Four years ago she was married to the Hon. Mason Irwin, of Montesano, where she since resided. Two charming children, a girl and a boy, were born to them, both of whom have preceded her to the grave.

Mrs. Irwin was a woman of fine intellectual endowments, was thoroughly educated, extensively informed, and was a recognized model in domestic and social life. To her family her death is and overwhelming calamity. Her sister, Mrs. Jordan, the only remaining child of Governor and Mrs. Newell, reached this city from San Francisco in time to be with her in her last hours. Mrs. Irwin will be buried on Friday, the 18th inst., in the Odd Fellows' cemetery, in this city. Funeral services will be held at Dr. Newell's residence, at 2 o'clock p.m. All people are invited to attend without further or special notice.
