"John Henry Bennett, 83, of 435 E. Morehead St. passed away Wednesday morning at a local hospital. Born in York County, S. C. on December 18, 1878, he was the son of the late Doctor Greene and Amanda Johnston Bennett. Mr. Bennett moved to Charlotte 70 years ago and had been engaged in the real estate business for over 50 years. He was a member of the Tabernacle Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church; a Mason, being a member of Excelsior Lodge over 55 years, and was a Shriner and member of Oasis Temple. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ada Stearns Bennett; three daughters, Mrs. J. W. Springs and Mrs. M. L. Grant, both of Charlotte, Mrs. Carl H. Schlosberg, of Camden, S. C.; and a son, John H. Bennett, Jr., of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m., from the Tabernacle A. R. P. Church, conducted by his pastor, Dr. Henry E. Pressly. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Pallbearers are Howell Glenn, Harry Brown, E. G. Scott, Eddie Phillips, Aubrey Myers, A. Fleet Yandell, S. L. Boyce, and J. Baxter Bigham. Arrangements by Harry and Bryant Funeral Directors."
John Henry Bennett married Ada Eugenia Stearns (1887-1980) in 1902. She was the first daughter and second of ten children born to Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) and his wife Mary Jane Beachum (1867-1910).
John Henry and Ada had four children: Lois Ethel Bennett (1904-1988, m. 1st Raymond R. Keplinger, 2nd. James W. Springs), Lela Bernice Bennett (1906-1983, m. 1st John A. Boyd, 2nd. Melvin L. Grant), John Henry Bennett, Jr. (1909-1987, m. Zula E. Lowder), and Virginia Mae Bennett, (1914-2008, m. Carl H. Schlosberg).
