BERT WILLIAM DAVENPORT was born in Greenwood, Missouri, February 7, 1874, and passed away at his home in Little River, Kansas, May 6, 1939, at the age of 65 years, 2 months and 29 days.
He was the son of Ira F. and Susan J. Davenport. He moved to Rice county, Kansas, in 1891, and lived on a farm seven miles south of Little River until 1901, when he moved to Little River where he resided until his death.
On August 5, 1897, he was united in marriage to Florence Wohlford and to this union were born two daughters – Mrs. Marie Brouhard of Fort Smith, Ark., and Mrs. Velma Cramer of McPherson, Kans.
When he moved to Little River he was engaged in the restaurant business for eight years, then entered the drug business when Albert Clark and this partnership was continued for eighteen years.
During the past few years he has operated the Little River Ice and Storage Company plant.
He was a member of Corner Stone Lodge No. 219, A. F. & A. M., and a charter member of Corner Stone Chapter Eastern Star, and was also a member of Cofield Camp No. 1689, Modern Woodmen of America, and held the office of local clerk of this organization thirty-three years.
He served as a member of the school board for fifteen years and was serving a second term as mayor of the city of Little River.
He is survived by his wife, Florence R. Davenport, and the two daughters; three brothers – Corridon H. of Lawrence, Kans., Frank R. of Milwaukee, Wis., and Arthur of [illegible] Kans.; one sister, Mrs. Larry Timpone, of Denver, Colo.; one grandchild, William R. Brouhard, of Fort Smith, Ark.; many more distant relatives, and countless friends.
Funeral services were conducted from the High school auditorium at 2:30 Monday afternoon by Pastor John T. Spriggs of the Little River Congregational Church, assisted by Rev. Glenn Witherspoon of the McPherson Congregational Church. The body was laid to rest in Bean cemetery.
