Lt. William J. Srna, 24, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. James Srna of Delphos was killed at Muroc Field, Calif., Saturday morning in the crash of a B-24 bomber which took the lives of its crew of seven men. Bill was bombardier aboard the ship.
The Army asked permission of the family to cremate the body. A military service for the seven men was held at Riverside, Calif. Tuesday afternoon. Lieutenant Srna's widow, the former Frances Hurley, who had been with him at Muroc, started home with the remains Wednesday and is to arrive in Salina at 2 o'clock Friday morning. She is accompanied by a military escort.
Plans are to take the body to the Srna home southwest of Delphos sometime Friday and services will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Delphos, but time of the service had not been decided this morning. Pallbearers and a firing squad will be provided from Camp Phillips, Salina, KS.
Bill entered the service in September, 1942. He was one of the first from this community to be accepted for air cadet training and was the only serviceman from here to wear the wings of a bombardier.
After receiving his commission last October, Bill spent some time here on furlough and was united in marriage October 30 before returning to camp. The community was deeply grieved to learn of his death and extends sympathy to his sorrowing parents and widow.
