As briefly mentioned in our last issue, Mrs. John Arenz Sr., passed peacefully
away last Wednesday, Nov. I7 at 11 p.m. at the home of her son-in-law, Bart
Lechner, living 4 miles south and 1 mile east of Leonore, where she and her
husband had been making their home of late. An illness of only a short duration
preceded her death. She reached the nice old age of 80 years, 9 months and 23
days.
Wilhelmina Naas was born at Mittelscheid, Buergermeisterei Overath, Kreis Sieg,
Regierungsbexirk Koeln, Germany, Jan. 24, 1835. She was married to John Arenz in
the Catholic church in Eitdorf on May 28, 1859. A daughter was born to them on
May 23, 1860, in Germany. In the month of May, 1861, the family came to the
United States and settled down at Peru, Ill., where they remained one year until
they moved onto a farm near Leouore. They quit farming about 20 years ago and
built a residence in Richland, where M. D. Huss now resides, where they lived
until 6 years ago. They quit housekeeping 6 years ago, on accouut of poor
health, when they took up their residence alternately with their daughters.
Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Arenz, three of whom died in infancy.
Those still living are Mrs. Wm. Seipp of Streator, William of near Garneld,
Charles of Lostant, Mrs. Louis Jeagle near Wenona, Mrs. Bart Lechner, John near
Leonore, and Henry of Los Angeles, Calif.
The deceased leave her aged husband, 7 children, 29 grandchildren, 3 great
grandchildren, one brother, Wm. Naas Sr., of Cabery, Ill., and one sister,
Theresa Miebach, of Champaign, Ill., to mourn her loss. She died at her old home
at Mr. and Mrs. Bart Lechner's.
The funeral took place at the Catholic cemetery in Richland Saturday forenoon.
St. Mary's society, of which the deceased was an honored member, escorted the
remains to their last resting place.
Six grandsons of the deceased, namely, William Seipp Jr., Chas. and Paul Jaegle,
Wm. and Arthur Arenz and John Lechner, acted as pallbearers, while four of her
grand daughters, Amelia Seipp, Mayme Arenz, Nora Lechner and Tillie Jeagle,
carried the flowers.
The funeral cortage was quite a long one, and, the large attendance at the
burial was proof of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all who
knew her in life. After a requiem mass at the Catholic Sts. Peter and Paul's
church in Richland the procession moved to the cemetery close by in the usual
order. The earthly remains of the deceased were laid to rest in a cement vault.
Many beautiful and costly floral offerings decked the fine casket
