Matthew Vern Potter was the son of Navy CPO and Mrs. Donald R. Potter who were stationed in Hawaii. He lived with his family in Halsey Terrace. Matt was active in the Boy Scouts in Honolulu, Hawaii. He went missing the evening of June 25, 1973.

Matt was seen earlier in the evening near a hotel swimming pool. At 11:00 p.m., a hotel clerk found Matt in a first-floor elevator of the Kalia Inn in Waikiki. He had been stabbed multiple times, and moved to the elevator after he was slain.
