Moving to Kansas he worked on farms in Marion County, he married a neighbor girl Cynthia Clausen in 1895.
They raised wheat and corn but where discouraged by drought and cinch bugs. Leaving Kansas for Pomona California, they arrived with two trunks, 18 month old son, and $40.
Working in Claremont CA, for one year, he went to a job in Bryn Mawr,(Redlands area) and eventually bought his own acreage, 8 1/2 acres with a home, gradually adding to it. His son joined him working at Bryn Mawr Fruit Growers association. They had added two daughters, Leta Carroll(1901-1993) and Irene Sweet(1905-1966)
