Lewis Poppe was born on a farm northwest of New Bremen on Plattner Rd. in St. Marys Twp. He married Clara Dicke on 8/29/1917. They had 4 children:

Rachel (George) Olin
Carl Poppe
Ruth (Vernon) Kuck
Paul Poppe

He was a member of St. Paul UCC in NB.

Mr. Poppe was a veteran of WWI. He belonged to the NB American Legion Post 241 and was a past post commander. For many years, he served as a judge for the board of elections at NB.

After Lewis returned from military service in 1919, he started a shoe repair shop in NB and later opened the shoe store which he continued to operate until the time of his hospitalization on Sunday, October 22, 1972. He died the following Saturday.

He was always interested and active in the affairs of the village and New Bremen community.
