Married Laura Louise Ruble in 1939.

Melvin Wayne Applegate 'Mel', 92, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, April 21 at the Idaho Veteran's Home in Lewiston, ID. Mel was born in Morrison, OK on Oct. 15, 1915 to Preston and Mae Applegate.
His family moved to Idaho when he was a young child and settled in Caldwell. Life was hard during Mel's childhood years but he always worked hard, sometimes in the coal yard, as a bellman at the hotel, delivering telegraphs and eventually in the machine and sprinkler pump business.
He married Laura Ruble in 1939. They were married almost 69 years and had three children, Robin, Meriellen and Bill.
Mel and Laura lived in Idaho, California and Washington. Mel was working in aircraft plants in California when he was drafted in July 1945. After the War they moved back to Idaho, then on to Washington where they resided in the Seattle area. They moved from Washington back to Idaho in 1966. They lived in Council until 1993 when they moved to Coeur d'Alene to be near Robin and her family.
In February 2007 Mel and Laura moved to the Idaho Veterans' Home in Lewiston.
Pop always worked with his hands and loved to "tinker" on all things mechanical.
He was a gentle man, unassuming and kind.
Mel is survived by his wife of almost 69 years, Laura, who now resides at the Idaho Veterans' Home in Boise, his brother Bob Applegate of Boise, ID; daughters Robin Lowe and her husband Ron; and Meriellen Harris, both of Coeur d'Alene, ID; and son Bill Applegate and his wife Diane of Boise, ID. He has eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ab and Del; his sister Laree Holmes; and a grandson, Dickie. A memorial will be held on Saturday, June 28 at the Idaho Veterans' Cemetery in Boise. A reception will follow at the home of Bill and Diane Applegate in Boise.
