George William Early, son of Jerome and Kate (Goode) Early, was born 12 JUN 1869, LaCygne, Linn County, Kansas. His parents divorced when he was about 6 years old; his father subsequently remarried and moved to Oregon.

George married Ruth "Ora" Cline in Mound City, Kansas on 29 AUG 1894. They lived most of their lives in Linn County, Kansas, near Parker, where they had a 160 acre farm.

(the following is written from memories of George's granddaughter, Ione Jeannette Early [1925-2007]):
"He used a team of mules (one was named Maude), instead of the modern-day tractor, to work the fields. Sometimes when he would drive the team and wagon to Parker and tie them to the hitching post in front of Polley's Store, the mules would break away and run home, leaving grandpa to walk the 1 1/2 miles back.

His main crops were wheat, corn and kafir corn. All the neighbors helped each other at harvest time. Neighbor women would help in the kitchen preparing a large noon-time meal to have ready for the men when they came in from the fields. They all went from farm to farm.

Besides the mules, there were horses, cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. Grandpa had a smokehouse where he butchered and cured his own meat. A big persimmon grove surrounded the pond where the farm animals drank water. Grandpa always kept a loaded shotgun to kill timberwolves because they would attack the sheep. I can remember the wolves howling at night.

Grandma died in 1938. Grandpa sold the farm in 1939. He moved to Long Beach, CA, where he started a new life at age 70, although he returned to Kansas every year for Memorial Day; travelling by bus, until he was about 90 years old. There was always a family reunion held at Wallace Park in Paola, KS to celebrate his June birthday.

In Long Beach, he renewed a friendship with Daisy. She and her husband had been friends of my grandparents for years. Daisy was also mourning the loss of a life-long spouse. After awhile they were married and were together for 22 years until Daisy died at age 93. Grandpa returned to Kansas and died a year later at age 94, on April 14, 1964 -just 2 months short of his 95th birthday. It was always his goal to live to be 100.

He was a staunch Republican and voted in every election. I remember him as having a lot of energy and being very hard-working."
