The Sullivan, MO News, Oct 4, 1951, page 1 shows W. G. Schmidt Dies in Sleep at Son's Home in Centralia.
W. G. Schmidt was found dead in bed Thursday morning at the home of his son, G.A. Schmidt, in Centralia, when he was called to breakfast. Death is thought to have occurred about 2am. His daughter Mrs. Mabel Flauher, had gone to Centralia the day before for a few days visit. William Gustave Schmidt, son of the late Charles Gustave Schmidt and Minnie Fanwick Schmidt, passed away at the home of his son, Mr. G. A. Schmidt of Centralia, MO on September 27, 1951. He had attained the age of 85-0-25. Mr. Schmidt was born in Franklin County near Union, MO on September 2, 1866. On February 14, 1894 he was married to Virginia Frances Renick who bore him four children, two of whom preceded him in death. They were a daughter, Ona M and a son Albert R. His wife preceded him in death, having passed away in 1938. Mr. Schmidt was baptized into the Pentecostal Church in 1915 and remained a steadfast member for 47 years. Mr. Schmidt owned and operated a mercantile business in and around Japan, Gerald and the Elmont district. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mabel Flaugher of Sullivan and a son G.A. of Centralia. Three grandchildren and a great grandchild and a number of other relatives and friends survive. The remains lay in state at the Meader Funeral Home in Centralia and then at the Eaton Funeral Home of Sullivan. Church services were conducted from the Assembly of God in Sullivan at 2pm Sunday, September 30, 1951. The Rev. Joe Ragsdale and the Rev. Glenn Renick of Hannibal, a nephew, officiated. Interment was in Lockhart cemetery.
