Charlotte Adams Sanford, daughter of Alexander and Mary Sanford. Born Westmoreland County, Virginia. Said to be their second eldest child, birth date about 1808 (aged 67 years and 9 months at death). Married James Barnes 1832.
Her sisters mainly married military men: Henrietta married Major John B Clark, Mary married Colonel Henry Bainbridge and Irene married army surgeon Dr John Emerson.
The remaining sister, Virginia, married stove manufacturer from Albany, Samuel H. Ransom. Samuel's sister Lydia, married Charlotte's brother, naval man Captain Joseph P Sanford.
Charlottes other brother was John F A Sanford, frontiersman and partner of fur trader Pierre Chouteau Jr. He also became his son-in-law. John Sanford's marriage to Chouteau's daughter, Emilie, ended in 1836 when she died aged only 22.
Sanford was one of Chouteau's top aides and trusted member of his team. He worked in Washington and New York running various business ventures for him, becoming wealthy.
Charlotte's sister, Irene, had married Dr John Emerson, who had a slave named Dred Scott. When Dr Emerson died, Scott attempted to buy his freedom. When this failed he took Irene to court, and he had a very good case, having been employed at one time in a free state. However, the case dragged on for years and it finally ended up in the Supreme Court with John F A Sanford being the defendant. The result has become a landmark verdict.
Charlotte's son John Sanford Barnes wrote an autobiography that is on web and provides good family history and much more. https://sites.google.com/site/johnsanfordbarnes/
