MARSTONS MILLS, MA — Our beloved Stanley Potter Negus Jr., 76, passed away at home on June 4, 2009, after a short and virtually painless battle with esophageal cancer.
Stan was born on February 26, 1933, in New Bedford to the late Janet (Briggs) and Stanley P. Negus. He was preceded by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Hubbard Negus, who passed away on November 11, 2007. Stan and "Ruthie" were married on February 28, 1953, in Bourne.
He is survived by his sister, Linda Negus Cherry, and her husband, Charles W. Cherry of Acworth, GA; brother, Richard M. Negus of Cotuit; daughter, Carol Negus Smith, and her husband, Bruce E. Smith of Brookline, NH; son, David W. Negus, and his wife, Miriam Herrera Negus of the Philippines; and son, James A. Negus, and his wife, Susan Baker Negus of Maynardville, TN. Stan leaves seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Stan graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1957 and worked 38 years for the Wyman-Gordon Company as a licensed professional engineer.
Stan loved to boat and fish, but his passion was shellfishing. He was instrumental in forming, and served as President of the Barnstable Association for Recreational Shellfishing (B.A.R.S.), an organization dedicated to shellfish propagation and the protection of shellfish habitat. Stan spent many years navigating the waters of Cape Cod and the Islands, with Cuttyhunk a favorite destination. He took responsibility as weighmaster for the Osterville Anglers' Club, and all other obligations in his life for that matter, with the greatest passion imaginable.
He was first and foremost a loving, dedicated husband, father, and friend. Stan stood as proud and firm in the face of life's challenges as any ship to have ever sailed the seas. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and amazingly deep, resonating voice.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 pm on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Doane, Beal, and Ames, located at 160 West Main St., in Hyannis. A service to celebrate Stan's life will be held at 11:00 am the following day at The Unitarian Church of Barnstable, located on the northeast corner of Route 6A and Phinneys Lane. A private interment service will be held at the Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stan Negus Scholarship Fund, care of B.A.R.S., PO Box 57 West Barnstable, MA 02668. This scholarship was initiated years ago by Stan to support qualified college students pursuing studies in environmental or biological sciences.
