Parachute Jumper Killed:

Columbus, Neb., July 4 - Paul Hackstack of Humphrey, this county, was killed just after the ascent of the balloon to which he was attached, during the Fourth of July celebration here today, in the presence of many thousands of people.

Hackstack had started on his voyage skyward, with the wind blowing a gale, about 2 o'clock this afternoon. When less than 25 feet in the air, the balloon became unmanageable and its passenger was dashed against a telephone pole and then against a building with terrific force. The collision caused Hackstack to loose his hold and drop to the ground, 20 feet below. He was picked up unconscious and hurried to a hospital, but he died en route.

Hackstack is said to have been an experienced aeronaut, and while but 25 years of age, he had made many ascensions and parachute drops.

He was married and leaves a wife and two small children.##
