LIPSCOMB - Jim Bussard, 85, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Lipscomb Cemetery with Donald Hill officiating. Arrangements are by Hughs Funeral Home of Canadian.

Jim was born Nov. 20, 1923, in Canadian to the late Lloyd Bussard and Mildred Keffer Bussard. The Canadian River was flooded at the time, so they had to place Mrs. Bussard in a basket attached to a cable to get her across the river. Then returning home, the family decided to take Jim back across the river in the basket.

He attended grammar school at Locust Grove and was a 1941 graduate of Canadian High School. He then went on to attend Panhandle State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II in the South Pacific. He married Mona Turner on May 5, 1953, in Tucumcari, N.M. She preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 2002.

Jim retired from ranching a year ago and so did his horse, Buck. He was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church and also was a lifelong resident of Lipscomb County.

Survivors include two sons, Lane Hill and wife Brenda of Darrouzett and Lance Bussard and wife Tanja of Lipscomb; a daughter, LaVaun Kraft and husband Merle of Lipscomb; a sister, Katie Thorne of Amarillo; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Wolf Creek Heritage Museum, P.O. Box 5, Lipscomb, TX 79056.

Viewing will be at First Christian Church Chapel, 402 Purcell Ave., in Canadian.
