Cecil L. Goettsch, 93, of Monticello, died Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the United Church of Monticello with Rev. Jean Sullivan officiating. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at Goettsch Funeral Home in Monticello, where a Masonic service will begin at 2 p.m. Private family burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello on Monday.

Cecil is survived by 4 children, Jeryl (Bill) Mawe and Cecil "Larry" (Jackie) Goettsch of Clive, Janilyn Kyte of Monticello and Gordon (Deb) Goettsch of Manchester; 12 grandchildren, Diane Mathuny, Mark Mawe, Marcia McMillin, Laurilyn Dowling, James and Matthew Goettsch, Jay, Jocelyn and Jon Kyte, Caryn, Spencer and Nathan Goettsch and 2 step-grandchildren, John Barton and Michelle Plaveczky; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Verne "Bud" Goettsch of Monticello and Harry (Trudy) Goettsch of Jefferson, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bertyce; 2 sisters, Doris Bailey and Francine Crawford Logan; and a brother, Robert J. Goettsch.

Cecil Lawrence Goettsch was born July 29, 1915 in Gladbrook, IA. He was the son of Harry James and Anna Christina Goettsch. On September 21, 1937 he was united in marriage with Bertyce Heidecker in Sibley, IA at her parents home. The couple made their home in Monticello all 67 years of their married life.

Professionally, Cecil owned and operated Goettsch Funeral Homes in Monticello, Anamosa and Hopkinton with his brother Bud. Cecil was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association for more than 70 years, serving in numerous leadership roles including president of the association in 1956-57. In addition, he was an active member of the National Funeral Directors Association and served as its president in 1978-79. During his career, Cecil was a member of the Iowa State Funeral Director and Embalmer Examining Board, the Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards and an officer in the American Board of Funeral Service Education.

In the community, he was a member of the Monticello Golf Club for 70 years, playing as recently as last summer. He was past-president of the Great Jones County Fair Board, past-president of the Monticello Rotary Club and a charter member of the Monticello Lions Club. He was a director of the Monticello State Bank for 40 years and served on the City State Bank board in Central City. He served as Worthy Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Master of the Burns Lodge AF&AM, a director of the El Kahir Shrine Cedar Rapids Temple and a director of the Royal Order of Jesters.

In addition to his Monticello home, in recent years Cecil was a part of the Cottage Grove Place retirement community in Cedar Rapids.
