Great Uncle Bud was the maternal grandson of Thomas and Mary A. "Polly" Stacey and the paternal grandson of Booker and Mary Jane "Janie" Nelson Bailey.
Bud suffered from a chronic condition of the lungs that made him susceptible to any disease that affected his breathing. Hence, when Lawrence County was in the midst of a flu epidemic in 1918, Bud contracted influenza but was unable to survive it. He was dead at the age of 37. Many of Lawrence County's citizens lost their lives during this difficult time.

The Lawrence Democrat 23 Oct 1918
Bud Bailey, son of Thomas Bailey of Route 2, died Sunday morning after a brief illness of influenza. He had suffered from respiratory troubles for years and this made him unable to resist the ravages of the epidemic when it struck him. He was about forty years old and unmarried.
