Harrison was born in Columbia County, New York and moved to Mexico, Oswego County, New York before 1850. His mother died about 1851/52 and his father married Esther Delano in 1853. The family then moved to Chenoa, McLean, Illinois.
On 10 Jun 1862 Harrison enlisted in Company K, Ohio 84th Infantry Regiment He mustered out on 20 Sept. 1862 at Camp Delaware, OH. He re-enlisted with the 11th Battalion Ohio Volunteer Infantry Sept 21, 1862 and transferred from Company C to Company D on June 21, 1864. He completed his Civil War service on June 11, 1865, having served one year with the Ohio 64th and three years with the 11th Battalion.
At the end of the Civil War, Harrison moved to Independence, Missouri where he met and married his wife, Libbie, and lived out the rest of his life.
