Phoebe graduated from Circleville High School in 1917. She had planned to go into nurses training, but at the last moment took a job teaching school at Brewter, Kansas, a rural school. She also taught third and fourth grades in Circleville for five terms before she was married and taught six terms there after she was married.
She went to California with Mr. and Mrs. Coakley by car in 1922. Deke came out later on the train. They were married out there. By this time Deke had become a successful farmer and road patrolman in Reilly Township.
Deke and Phoebe made their home four miles north of Soldier in the new home they had built. They raised four children. First three are girls and then one boy.
