Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Experience as a civilian railroad agent prior to the war undoubtedly primed him with the necessary ability and know-how to discharge his duties as a Quartermaster. He enlisted into the United States Volunteers as appointed Assistant Quartermaster on or about October 7, 1861. He remained in this position until the expiration of his appointment in March of 1863. Boyd later became attached to the XX Corps, Army of the Cumberland to continue in the Quartermasters Department. He served the entire war in this branch of service with additional appointments in the XXII Corps, Army of the Ohio and the Department of North Carolina. He was promoted to full Colonel on June 21, 1865. For his "faithful and meritorious services during the war", he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers, on March 13, 1865. He was captured by the Confederates during the course of the war, and was one of the 109 Union officers who tunneled out of and escaped the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia on February 9, 1864.
