Hello Doug,

My name is Patricia Gale McCoy. I think the J J Minoms, Memorial #38134914, that you listed on Find A Grave is actually my gggg uncle, John J Mims. He was a confederate, Private, Company G 39th Alabama. He was born in South Caroline in 1832, and died of pneumonia as a prisioner of war 18 Feb 1865 at Camp Douglas. He was originally buried in Chicago City Cemetery, Block 3, grave #813.

Find A Grave information on Chicago City Cemetery indicates all but 2 interred there were moved in 1870. The prisioners that died at Camp Douglas were moved to Oak Woods. Find A Grave has a Memorial #9596325 for Pvt John J Mims in the Chicago City Cemetery, which lists his military history and actually has a link to his daughter's family.

There is not an online listing for John J Mims in Oak Woods. The listing you posted for J J Minoms is the closest I can find, and judging by the G 39 GA, even though he was Alabama, I still think it's him. I don't know how much care was taken in moving the bodies, which may also account for the surname Minoms instead of Mims.

No picture of a stone or marker in Oak Woods is posted. Do you remember if an actual marker is there? I live in an Atlanta, GA suburb, but I have a coworker in Chicago that I could ask to take a picture.

I appreciate your help.............and thank you so much for listing all of these people!
John J. Mims;
Private - Company G. 39th. Alabama Infantry

He enlisted at Opelika, Alabama, 15 May 1862 at the age of 30.
On 1 January 1863 John was sent to the hospital at Dalton, Georgia to be treated for a gunshot wound and was returned to duty 13 days later.
He was captured at Nashville, Tennessee on 15 December 1864 and was sent to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky.
From there he was transferred on 20 December 1864 to Camp Douglas, Illinois where he died of pneumonia on 18 February 1865.

He was buried in Block 3 grave #813 Chicago City Cemetery. John like many others left behind a wife Sarah Ann (Bracewell) Mims.
