Civil War Union Army Soldier. He served during the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company G, 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He was mortally wounded on July 2, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, and died on July 24,1863.

He was interred with his fallen comrades from Maine in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. His family erected a cenotaph for him in the family plot in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor, Penobscot County, Maine.
