Winnie was born with severe cerebral palsy and had been taken care of as a baby since infancy. His mental capacity was outstanding but he was totally incapable of caring for himself physically. He was not expected to live past the age of seven and remarkably lived until the age of 66. His mother cared for him at home until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, at which time she and Winnie went to live at Gasconade Manor Nursing Home in Owensville, Mo. He adjusted well and made many friends there. Those who knew him well were able to communicate with him even without his electronic communicator, which he manipulated with his chin.
