Mabel M. Payne, age 87, of Rhinelander died Sun., Dec. 30, 2001 at the Taylor Park Nursing Home. She was born in Edgar WI, to August and Anna (Persel) Gartman.
She attended schools in Elm City WI. She married Elmer Payne on June 8, 1940 in Gleason, and they moved to Rhinelander in 1941 where she has lived since. She was employed part-time in the kitchen at Rhinelander High School from 1968 to 1971. She enjoyed sewing and gardening and really enjoyed the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one bother, August Gartman, and a sister, Anna Heckendorf.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer, of Rhinelander; five sisters, Estella Hawkins of Poinciana FL, Iva Hoffman, of Merrill, Lillian O'Brien of Wausau; Gertrude Van Slate of Wausau and Evelyn Mielke of Wausau; one brother, Reuben "Mike" (Nancy) Gartman of Merrill; one daughter of Stevens Point; two sons; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wed., Jan. 2, at 11 p.m. (?) at Carlson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tues., Jan. 1, and just prior to services Wed. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Northland Memorial Park. Carlson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
