A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Greensboro. Interment will follow at Alamance Presbyterian Church, 4000 Presbyterian Road, Greensboro, N.C.
Born in Raleigh on March 1, 1915, Craig lived much of his early childhood in Lincoln County near Startown. He later moved to Chapel Hill where he attended high school and the University of North Carolina. A member of UNC's class of 1936, he received a Bachelor's Degree in Math. Following his post graduate studies, he immediately joined the Actuarial Department at Pilot Life Insurance Company. During his 48 year career with Pilot Life, he later served as comptroller and as vice president of Finance, the position he held at the time of his retirement in 1985.
Craig was a long-time member and Deacon in the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, an executive retiree from Pilot Life Insurance Company, and a member of Kiawanis International.
Craig distinguished himself as a Pilot/Aircraft Commander in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Stationed in New Guinea, he flew the B-24 "Liberator" bomber against nighttime enemy shipping. He flew 34 missions totaling 340 combat flying hours over enemy- occupied territory; received the Air Medal and two Oak Leaf Clusters; and attained the rank of Major before returning to civilian life in 1945.
He was the son of the late Charles Eugene McIntosh, Sr. and the late Linda Shuford McIntosh of Chapel Hill. Two brothers, Charles Eugene McIntosh, Jr. of Summerfield, and Thomas Jonathan McIntosh of Chattanooga, Tenn., also preceded him in death.
Craig is survived by his wife of 66 years, Thelma Kirkman McIntosh of Greensboro; a son, Craig Shuford McIntosh, Jr.; and a daughter, Ann Kirkman McIntosh Finch, and her husband, Charles W. Finch, Colonel, USAF (retired), all of Greensboro. Other surviving relatives include granddaughters, Emily Finch Bridgers (Michael) of Waxhaw and Susan Ryan Finch of Greensboro; step-grandson, Michael Smith of Charlotte and step-granddaughter, Catherine Smith of Greensboro. Also surviving are 12 nephews and nieces including Charles M. Tate of Greensboro and Virginia P. McIntosh of Summerfield. One surviving sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles E. McIntosh, Jr., also lives in Summerfield.
