The Ball family had long been operators of the Bemis Point to Stow Ferry. In 1916 he built the first New Ferry and in 1925 Earl became sole owner/operator of this Chautauqua Lake Ferry crossing. He also converted it first from hand operation to steam, then in later years to gasoline power. He also worked as a boat builder and as a fireman.
