Joseph Holub, 77, of What Cheer, died June 9, 2009, as a result of a traffic accident.

Joseph was born in Indianapolis, Iowa, on Nov. 18, 1931, the son of Louie and Rosetta Lillard Holub.

He was a 1949 graduate of What Cheer High School. Joe began farming on his own at age 18. In 1964, he was united in marriage to Regan Watson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He began his pure breed Charolais herd, which is known nationally, in 1977. Throughout the years Joe enjoyed tractor pulling, playing softball and basketball with the YMCA League and the Old Timers softball games held during the 4th of July celebrations in What Cheer. He also enjoyed showing his cattle in 4-H and several other cattle shows around the nation. Joe always looked forward to the Iowa State Biggest Bull Contest, which he won five times. His passion in life was without doubt his cattle, yet Joe's pride, joy and reason for all of his extraordinary effort was his family. He enjoyed all the time he spent with his children and always looked forward to being Grandpa. Joe rarely watched television; when he did, it was only to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes play. He was a member of the American International Charolais Association, Iowa Cattleman's Association and the Mahaska County Cattleman's Association. Joe Holub was an extraordinary man, a respected friend and an honest cattleman.

He leaves behind his wife, Regan; four daughters, Kimberly (Paul) Ashmore of Ankeny, Sondra (Michael Wilkinson) Longcor of Cedar Rapids, Cheryl (PJ) Corns of Ames, Mary Thomas of Grinnell; son, Curtis (Sarah) Holub of Houston, Texas; 16 grandchildren, Wyatt, Summer, Sophia, Taylor, Cassie, Alex, Sara, Ryan, Austin, McKenna, Spencer, Garrity, Andy, Jayson, Rocco and Joseph; sister, Louise Molymeux-Boender; three nephews, Bruce, Bryan and Brent Molyneux and a niece, Renee Steinke.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Kenneth Molyneux and a great-niece, Madison Steinke.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009, at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer.
