Elsie Mary Campbell was born July 30, 1911, east of Sparks, the only child of Roger Que Mills Campbell and Clara Belle Henderson Campbell. Elsie's father died when she was three years old. Her mother married Edgar Campbell, a cousin to her father, when Elsie was eight years old.

Elsie went to grade school in Sparks. The family moved to Ardmore and Elsie graduated from Ardmore High School in 1929. Elsie moved back to Sparks with her family and, during this time, she began to date Ellis (Jack) Gaines.

Jack and Elsie were married February 10, 1934, in Chandler, Oklahoma. They established their first home in Oklahoma City where Jack worked for ITIO Oil Company and later for Capital Gas Company.

Elsie and Jack had three children while living in Oklahoma City.

In 1946, the Gaines family moved to Meeker where Jack and Elsie operated a laundry. After one year, they moved to Sparks. Jack worked at Tinker AFB, commuting from Sparks until he was laid off. At that time he went into business for himself as a carpenter and worked at that trade until his retirement. Elsie worked in the general store in Sparks for Ned Neer from 1950 until 1960. Then she worked for the US Postal Service in Sparks starting in 1962 and worked there until her retirement after 20 years service.

Jack and Elsie were active members of the Methodist church in Sparks. Jack belonged to the Masonic Lodge and Elsie was a Past Matron of the Sparks Chapter of the Eastern Star. She had been a member of the Order 49 years.

Elsie died December 21, 1983 and Ellis died May 5, 1985. They are both buried at White Dove Cemetery at Sparks.
