John Alston Winningham came to Tennessee with his father Adam, when he was a young boy. He married Permelia Mayfield about 1835, they settled in the Wirmingham area of Overton County, Tennessee near Eagle Creek. John Alston and his brother Henry Bransford owned and operated a water mill for grinding meal and flour for several years. On December 4, 1847 he purchased a 200 acre tract of land for $30.00 from the Dillen heirs. On June 10, 1868 John Alston and his brother, Henry B. Winningham bought 800 acres in District 11 of Overton County from George Smith of Fentress Co., TN.

John Alston and his first wife Permelia are listed on the 1850 Overton Co., TN. Census district 11, with their children John Robert and Adam. He is a farmer and owns land valued at 800.00.

John Alston and Permelia are listed on the 1860 Overton Co., TN. Census, District 11. John Alston age 51, Permelia age 44, son Adam age 21 are listed with them.

On Dec. 12, 1885 John A. and wife Emily E. Winningham sold to J. R. Winningham and wife Eveline two-thirds of a tract of land in District 11 of Overton Co., TN. containing 800 acres except one acre which was deeded for a school, which was known as the Wirmingham School House.

John A. is listed on the 1900 Pickett Co, TN census with his wife Emily and children Permelia (age 25), Pernicie (age 23), Permettie (age21), Porter (age 20), and Perlina (age 18), along with nephew, I. McDonald (age 20).
