ALLEN, RICHARD
Richard M. (Skip) Allen, age 64, passed away at his home in Phoenix after a long valiant battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Louisville, Ky., and entered into rest Aug. 10, 2007, in Phoenix. He came to the valley from Illinois with his parents in 1957, and graduated from Tolleson Union High School in 1961, and later that same year, attended a drafting tech school in Denver. He lived and worked in Peeples Valley, Ariz., for a short time and then moved to Flagstaff, Ariz., where he worked for the Arizona State Highway Department for several years. Highway construction and engineering was his chosen career. He worked for several engineering and construction companies and was employed by HDR Inc. at the time of his death. While employed with HDR, he worked in Alaska, Idaho, Nevada and Arizona. In 1964, he married Lydia J. Godwin of Skull Valley, Ariz. They were later divorced. This union produced two daughters, Gwendolyn Sue "Suzie", who died as a result of an accident in Oregon, and Shawn Marie. Besides his daughter Suzie, he was preceded in death by his brother, Andy and his parents. Richard is survived by his daughter, Shawn of Phoenix; brothers, Mike of Wilhoit, Ariz., and Roy of Covington, Ind.; sister, Joyce Coates of Snyder, Texas; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Memorial service for Richard M. Allen "Skip" will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Aug. 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 3601 E. Shea Blvd., Phoenix (SE Corner of Shea and 36th St.) Lunch will be provided after the services. In lieu of flowers it is requested that any donations be made to Mantle Cell Lymphoma Research.
