James Calvin Tobias was born on November 11, 1856 in Franklin County Pennsylvania. After studying law, he established his practice in Bucyrus, Crawford County, Ohio where he became a well respected member of the bench. Father of two, Deane Tobias and Helen Monnett Philpott, nee Tobias.
He was elected Judge of the Probate Circuit Court and heard cases for many years in both Marion and in Crawford County.
In the 1910s, he and his wife relocated to Glendale California. His brother in law Mervin J. Monnette bought their home on North Sandusky Street and presented it to the city for use as Monnett Memorial Hospital, which served the community until 1932.
Cal Tobias died in California in September 24, 1929, the 50th anniversary of his wedding to Amina.
