Col. James E. Haile Jr. "Ernie," 93, of Sun City Summerlin, Las Vegas, passed away June 6, 2009, with family at his bedside. He was born Sept. 25, 1915, in Atlanta.
Ernie moved to Nevada after completing three successful careers, the first as a U.S. Air Force fighter pilot, the second as a mechanical engineer and the third as a real estate company owner.
Ernie graduated from Georgia Tech as a mechanical engineer in 1938, was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant pilot in 1939 in the U.S. Army Air Corps and flew 23 combat missions during World War II. He flew 52 different aircraft during his career with the Air Force. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Ernie began his mechanical engineering career with Battelle Institute in Ohio, then moved to Stencel Engineering in North Carolina. In 1971, he and his wife, Buena started a real estate company in their then hometown of Hendersonville, N.C., which they operated until 1990.
In 2003, Ernie and Buena retired to Sun City to be near family.
Ernie is survived by his wife, of 69 years, Buena; a son, James Haile III (Sandra); a daughter, Jill Hunter, DDS (Ken); four grandchildren, Kelly (Jerry) Coughlin, Jackie (Brian) Hollister, Danica (Jeremy) Knievel and Javin Haile; and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, June 15, at the Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 8601 Del Webb Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89134.
Interment will follow at 1:20 p.m., at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, in Boulder City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mountain View Presbyterian Church.
