Conrad Rieband thought he was born about 1877 in Darslieb, Prussia; however, he was probably born about November 1860. When he enlisted in the Army on March 17, 1885, he stated he was 24 years, 4 months old. In the 1900 Alpena, Michigan census, Mr. Rieband stated he was born in November 1863 in Germany. He was on his second marriage, to Catherine, who was about 9 years younger than him. They had no children. Mr. Rieband had immigrated to America in 1880.
He was about 80 years old in 1944 when he applied for membership in the Washington Veterans' Home. Due to his advanced years, he could not recall the names of his parents.
MILITARY RECORD:
He enlisted three times in the U.S. Army.
1) March 17, 1885-March 16, 1890, Troop "A", 6th Cavalry.
2) March 25, 1890-March 24, 1895, Army Hospital Corps.
3) March 25, 1895-December 3, 1897, Army Hospital Corps. He was discharged as a Hospital Steward and received a pension on Certificate No. C-2,579,199.
He had lived in Washington state since 1907 and had resided in and around Bellingham and Blaine, Washington. He married Nettie on February 27, 1921. Next of kin was listed as his sister-in-law, Stella Thompson of Seattle.
Conrad Rieband, died July 17, 1944 at the Washington Veterans' Home. His death record estimated his death at 80 years; however, it is more likely that he over 83 years old. Mr. Rieband is buried in the Veterans' Home Cemetery.
