BAYLOR DIES
IN NORTH RIVER
WHILE FISHING

A 73 year-old man collapsed while fishing yesterday about 5:30 p.m. in the North River and was pronounced dead by a Grottoes physician after a life saving crew failed to revive him despite two and one half hours of effort.

Hampton Gaines Baylor of Waynesboro was fishing in the river near Mt. Meridian in Rockingham County with Sidney Bear, also of Waynesboro, when he suddenly stumped, according to Mr.. Bear.

At first Mr. Bear thought Mr. Baylor, who had waded deep into the river, had slipped in a hole and drowned.

But less than a third of a glass of water was extracted from the man. A preliminary report by the physician on the scene indicated death may have occurred from a heart attack. The county coroner is expected to make a report today.

Mr. Baylor, who has been known for "wading into water deeper than others" is survived by his wife, Fannie Eakle; and three sons, George, Charlottesville; Hampton, Staunton; and Jack, Waynesboro. He was a retired real estate agent, who spent a great deal of time fishing and hunting.

The life saving crew worked over Mr. Baylor, using three tanks of oxygen trying to revise him. The crew is made up of Waynesboro firemen and members of the Etter Funeral Home of Waynesboro, whose ambulance and oxygen equipment was used.

Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
