Moses Stuart Pettingell was one of the children born to Moses Pettingell and his wife Mary Hale Haskell. He was a successful railroad contractor and civil engineer, and at the time of his death was owner of extensive lands in Iowa, on which valuable coal mines have been developed.

Moses served his country during the U.S. Civil War as a First Sergeant. He enlisted on March 22, 1862 in the 2nd Volunteer Iowa Infantry Company D. Moses was wounded June 25, 1863, at Vicksburg. (From the book "John Mason Pettingell a Pettingell Genealogy..)

Moses did not marry or have any children born to him according to census and death records. He passed away at the young age of 39 from chronic diarrhea as per his death records.
