A Civil War veteran, John enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9, 1862, as a private with Co. D, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863. He then enlisted in Lykens, Dauphin County, June 15, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 19 as a sergeant with Co. D, 26th Pennsylvania Militia. Immediately promoted to 1st sergeant, he honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863, and is on the roster as "Pettiger." He last enlisted in Harrisburg with the regular army February 26, 1864, assigned to Co. C, 4th U.S. Infantry, and deserted July 31, 1865.


John was married twice - 1st to Mary E. Swonger and together they had two known children. After Mary's death in 1895, he married Matilda Groff (widow of John Rineer) in 1901.
