He was the son of Theophilus Gaines (1842-1935) and Mary Margaret White (1850-1926) Hammond.

NOTE: From Mabel Golda Hammond - Thomas' daughter - states his name is CLARENCE THOMAS HAMMOND. This is the reverse order of the listing on his tombstone.

NOTE: On a pension form on January 15, 1898 filled out by Theophilus (his father) his name is listed as CLARENCE T.

NOTE: A hand written paper from Charles D Hammond (b: 1910) lists him as CLARENCE THOMAS.

Tom apparently reversed the order of his name at a later date.

TOM HAMMOND OF E'TOWN DIES - Long illness fatal to retired farmer and stock buyer

Tom C Hammond, 88, well-known resident, died at 6:15 o'clock Tuesday night at his home. He had been bedfast for nine months.

Hammond, who lived most of his life in this county, formerly farmed and also engaged in buying and selling livestock. At one time he operated a grocery and meat market in Elizabethtown.

He was born in Pike County, IL and moved to Jennings County with his family during his childhood. He was a member of Elizabethtown Masonic Lodge No 249 and had attended Rock Creek Methodist Church.

He was married November 15, 1896 to Miss Nellie Maude Akins, who preceded him in death. Two children, Beatrice and Glenn, also preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Friday morning at Hathaway Funeral Home, conducted by Dr T K Smith. Burial will be made at Garland Brook Cemetery (correction was at Springer Cemetery). Casket will be open at the funeral after 6 o'clock tonight. There will be Masonic grave side rites.

Survivors are eight children: Miss Mable Hammond at home; Mrs Cecil Gant; Mrs Don McGuire; Loyd and George Hammond, all of Columbus; Russell Hammond of Indianapolis; Mrs Max Kohl of AvonLake, Ohio and Kenneth Hammond of Elizabethtown; three brothers: George Hammond of Elizabethtown; Clint Hammond of Phoenix, AZ and Mark Hammond; two sisters: Mrs Jessie Gaither of Elizabethtown and Mrs Alice Wright of St Berniece.
