Joe Deane Abbott, 77, of Canyon died Monday, June 15, 2009, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in University Church of Christ with Bob Shepard, elder, and David Lough, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors.

Joe Deane Abbott was born Dec. 30, 1931, in McLean to George and Vera Abbott. He graduated from Canyon High School in 1950 and was selected to the all-state basketball team. He was recruited to play basketball at West Texas State College from 1950-1952. Joe was drafted by the Army and served for two years during the Korean War. In 1988, Joe was inducted into the CHS Hall of Fame.

Joe loved being outdoors, working in the yard, building things and playing basketball with his grandkids. He also loved the Dallas Cowboys, playing dominoes, hanging out with his family and shopping for his wife.

He was an avid supporter of all sports at Canyon High School and WT, where he and Ruby were known for their hospitality to many students. Joe will be remembered for his friendly smile.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Abbott; three daughters, Debbie Madewell and husband Jim, Vickie Gist and husband John David and Nickie Wood and husband Tuffy, all of Canyon; six grandchildren, Carrie Day and husband Eddie of Meadow, Ryan Gist and wife Kara and Misty Henderson and husband Justin, all of Canyon, Jordan Madewell and fiancee Leigh and Jacoby Madewell, all of Lubbock, and Seth Wood and wife Amy of Amarillo; six great-grandchildren, Bryanna and Dylan Day of Meadow and Kelsie Blanks, Haven and Tryan Henderson and Kaden McPherson, all of Canyon; two brothers, Clifford Abbott and Bill Abbott and wife Vina, all of Lubbock; a sister, Inez Prichard of Amarillo; many nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends whom he considered family.

The family suggests memorials be to High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114; or to WT Athletics, WT Box 60049, Canyon, TX 79016.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
