Her father worked as a mail clerk at the Canton Post Office, her grandfather as the superintendent of the mails at the Post Office, her uncle as a detective for the city police department, her mother as a saleslady at a retail clothing store, and her mother's aunt as a bookkeeper for a taxicab company.

In 1940 she and her parents and two siblings lived there with her grandparents and her mother's aunt Sadie. Their home was valued at only $9000 after the Great Depression. Her grandfather worked for the state highway department, her father as a service man for a motor company, and her mother as a saleslady at a department store. Their incomes for weeks worked in 1939 were $1200/52, $1400/52, and $800/52, respectively.
