Andrew Jackson 'A.J.' Magness was born January 28, 1914, in Lead Hill, Arkansas (Boone County), son of Edward Walter Magness (1877-1966) and Lula Pearl Morrow (1879-1958). Andrew's siblings were Park, George, Vivian, Gladys, and Walter P.

By 1920, the family had moved to Alluwe, Oklahoma (Nowata County), where A.J.'s father worked as an oil field driller. By 1930, the family had moved to Seminole, Oklahoma (Seminole County) where A.J.'s father was still working as an oil field driller.

Obituary, The Oklahoman, February 22, 2002
Andrew Jackson Magness, 88, succumbed peacefully at home Wednesday, February 20, 2002. A.J. will be remembered not only as a respected prominent businessman, but as a man dedicated to his friends and family. He was born January 28, 1914 in Lead Hill, Arkansas.

A.J. was one of the last true "wildcatter" oilmen. He worked his way from rig hand to become an industry leader in founding Magness Petroleum Company. He leaves his mark in several states, including Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and California.

A.J. married Verna Gandy November 18, 1933. They enjoyed fifty-six wonderful years together until Verna's death in 1989. We are thankful that they are now reunited. A.J. was a past member of the Petroleum Club, member of the Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, and the Nichols Hills United Methodist Church.

A.J. is survived by three children: Jay Magness, his wife Barbara; Gary Magness, his wife Rhonda; and Sue Magness. He had nine grandchildren: Jay Jr., Marcus, Andrew, Steven, and Terrin Magness; Kimberly Bohanon, Elizabeth Looney, and Michael, and Jonathan Gray. They, their spouses and his seven great grandchildren will never forget A.J's wisdom or the impact he had on their lives.

Services will be held Saturday, February 23 at 3:00 P.M. at The United Methodist Church of Nichols Hills. Entombment will follow in the Rose Hill Abbey Mausoleum. Smith and Kernke Funeral Directors.
