Vernice Pearl 'Verna' Gandy was born June 23, 1910, in Temple, Oklahoma (Cotton County), daughter of William Harrison Gandy (1870-1951) and Effie Mae Salladay (1883-1967). In 1920, the family was living in Cache, Oklahoma (Cotton County). William was a farmer, age 48, born in Missouri; and his wife, Effie, was age 36, born in Nebraska. Living with them were seven children: Elmer, age 19, born in Colorado; Edith, age 17, born in Colorado; Claude and Clyde (twins, age 13, born in Colorado; Verna, age 9, born in Oklahoma; Roy, age 5, born in Oklahoma; and Wayne, age 2, born in Oklahoma.

On November 18, 1933, Verna married Andrew Jackson Magness, who was born January 28, 1914 in Lead Hill, Arkansas. They were married 56 years before Verna's death in 1989. Verna and Andrew had three children, Sue, Jay, and Gary.

Verna P. Magness died Sunday, November 19, 1989 in Oklahoma City after a brief illness. She was born in Temple, Oklahoma to Effie and William H. Gandy. Verna was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend with a strong faith in God.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew J.; daughter and son-in-law, Sue M. and Gary Gray of Boston; son and daughter-in-law, Jay D. and Barbara Magness of Newport Beach, California; son, Gary D. of Oklahoma City; 9 grandchildren, Jay D., Jr., Marcus, Andrew, Steven, Michelle, Kimberly, and Elizabeth Looney and Michael and Jonathan Gray and two great grandchildren; her brother, Wayne Gandy and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Tuesday, November 21, at 11 a.m. at Nichols Hills United Methodist Church with interment following at Rose Hill Mausoleum under the direction of Hahn-Cook/Street and Draper Funeral Directors. The family requests memorials be made to the Nichols Hills United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
