Todd Martin Smith, formerly of Bridgewater and Bound Brook, passed away in Daytona Beach, Fla., May 18, 1989 at the age of 25.

Todd went missing on May 17, 1989 from his home in Rockaway Township and had been a missing person from that time until Jan. 30, 2008 when we learned that he drowned while snorkeling off Daytona Beach, Fla., the very day after he went missing. He was not identified as Todd by the Florida authorities in 1989 due to conflicts in the descriptions submitted to the national database by the agencies in both New Jersey and Florida. Kari Larson, a dedicated forensic technician in Florida finally made the match after searching cases on the DOE Network. We are eternally grateful to her for all she has done to bring much needed answers to our family. We are equally grateful to the DOE Network for all they do to help families get answers, as well as Debra Van Fleet, detective and supervisor with the Morris County Prosecutors office in New Jersey for her professionalism and kindness.

Todd is survived by his daughter, Ashley Smith of Whitehall, Pa.; his mother, Barbara Giles Smith of Whiting and Plainfield; his father, Donald Smith of Savannah, Ga. and Scotch Plains; his grandmother, Margaret Giles of Boca Raton, Fla.; his brother, Eric Smith of Bridgewater, and his sister, Kimberly Smith Schmalenberger and her husband, Stewart, of Iselin.

Todd is also survived by six nieces and nephews, Melissa Leonard, Matthew, Jonathan, Michael, Krista and Kayla Schmalenberger, all of Iselin; his former wife, Carol Cielecki of Whitehall, Pa.; an aunt and uncle, Margaret Smith Bazemore and Walton Bazemore of Savannah, Ga.; and two cousins, Scott Bazemore and his wife, Courtnay, of Atlanta, Ga., and Bruce Bazemore of Savannah, Ga. .....all of whom miss his joy and energy for life.

Todd attended Crim and Hillside schools in Bridgewater and graduated from Bound Brook High School in 1981.

Todd was a sports car enthusiast and an avid motorcyclist. He was a top-class competitor in NHRA - sponsored Enduro and Drag Bike racing events in Englishtown and Atco, as well as other locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, garnering many class wins and trophies. He also enjoyed bicycle riding with the Central Jersey Bicycle Club with his father and was always up for a good round of golf, often scoring in the 70s. Todd was a highly successful automobile sales executive with both Honda and Hyundai, earning many awards in his line of work. His zest for life was one that all should aspire to.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Reformed Church, 401 Greenbrook Road, North Plainfield. Burial at Hillside Cemetery will be 10 a.m. Monday.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Todd's name to Trinity Reformed Church.
