Mabel was the daughter of Geeorge and Alice Craig Hunt and widow of Patrick A. Whelan.

Patrick and Mabel were married in 1898 in St. Cecilia's Church, Back Bay, where Patrick had served as an altar boy. He was 21; she was 19 when they were married.

Patrick's sister, Margaret, made Mabel's wedding dress. His sister Elizabeth was a bridesmaid.

Their first born child, Mabel A. Whelan, born 28 March 1900 in Rhode Island, died at age 2.

Son, Hilary H. Whelan, studied for the priesthood but left and got his degree at Boston College. He became a counselor at Westwood High School. He married Marguerite O'Brien. He died at age 65, November 26, 1967, of cancer.

Son Gerald Whelan was born 25 Dec 1906. He left for the Seminary at age 13 and was ordained in 1932. He taught Latin and Greek in high school, was a missionary priest, and served as a Chaplain during World War II. He was shipwrecked and miraculously rescued after 7 hours in a crowded lifeboat in the North Atlantic.

Gerald served 3 addition years as a Major in Iceland. After leaving the service, he became Rector of the First Redemptionist Church in Rochester, New York; then President of St. Mary's College. Lastly, he served as pastor of Our Lady of the Mount, a one priest parish on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Gerald died 24 March 1985 and is buried ion Old Calvary Cemetery, Roslindale, with other priests.

Daughter Mary Whelan was secretary to the President of United Drug Co. She married Sylvester Fassnacht in Indiana.

Daughter Gertrude Whelan went to Teachers College in Boston where she received a Master's Degree. She taught in East Boston High School for 15 years and eventually to Roslindate High School where she finished 41 years of teaching. She taught Latin and Spanish and retired to Cape Cod, Mass

Formerly of Boston, she moved to Cape Cod to live with her daughter Gertrude.
