"Carl Frederick Degner was born on December 4, 1869, at Wolfriver (sic), Waupaca County, Wis., and departed from this life on last week Tuesday morning at 20 minutes before 4 o'clock, reaching an age of 72 years, 6 months and 19 days.

"At the age of 10 years he came, with his parents, to Nebraska and settled near Friedensau, where he was confirmed in April, 1883, by the sainted Rev. Mr. Biedermann.

"On April 12, 1893, he married Anna Grundmann. This union the Lord blessed with two daughters, Elsie, Mrs. Ernst Holtzen, and Marie, Mrs. Dale Alloway, who with their mother mourn his death. Among immediate mourners are also four brothers, Emil, William, Albert and Henry; two sisters, Mrs. Emilie Nehring, of Rockford, Ill., and Anna, Mrs. Fred Carpenter, of Dale, Ind.; two sons-in-law, and thirteen grandchildren.

"Mr. Degner spent the greater part of his life in Deshler and vicinity. [H]e enjoyed good health until about five years ago. About two years ago it became apparent that Mr. and Mrs. Degner could no longer care for each other in their home, and they were then welcomed into the home of their daughter, Mrs. Ernst Holtzen, where he received kind and tender care until his death. 'Let us learn to requite our parents, for that is good and acceptable before God.' Nine weeks ago Mr. Degner was stricken with complete paralysis of his left side. He suffered patiently, resigning himself into the gracious will of his heavenly Father. His end was a quiet and peaceful one.

"Funeral services were held at the home and St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Friday afternoon. The Rev. W. R. Miessler spoke words of comfort and admonition in German on Ps. 121 and in English on 1 Thess. 4:12-18 at the home and church respectively. Miss Lucille Rucklos sang 'Christus Der Ist Mein Leben,' and a trio composed of Miss Rucklos, Miss Helen Werner and Mrs. E. C. Hornbostel sang 'The Haven of Rest.'

"The body was laid to rest in St. Peter's cemetery, there to await the call on the last day unto eternal life. . ."
