Loyal "Dennis" Nickerson, age 58 of McMinnville died at the home of his son, in Chicago on Thursday, June 4, 2009
following a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services for Loyal "Dennis" Nickerson will be held Wednesday, June 10 at 11am at Willamette National Cemetery. Friends and relatives are welcome at Macy & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 9 between 4-7pm.

He was born August 10, 1950 in McMinnville, Oregon to the late Loyal and Doris Nickerson. He moved to Sheridan, Oregon in 1965. He graduated Sheridan High School in 1969. Dennis served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Immediately upon his discharge from the service he married Deidra G. Ellis of Nitro, West Virginia, and returned to Sheridan to work with his family farming business.

In 1993, Dennis began working at the Cascade Steel Rolling Mill in McMinnville. He served diligently as an Officer of United Steelworkers of America Local 8378, assisting in recent contract negotiations. Dennis worked at the Steel Mill until he fell ill in early 2007. He had previously worked at Liberty Homes in Sheridan, and Conifer Plywood in Willamina.

Dennis enjoyed traveling, whether it was to the coast for a day trip, or to visit his only son living in Chicago, Illinois. The energy and life of the City reinvigorated him, but spending time with his wife and son was the most important thing to Dennis.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Deidra of McMinnville, his son, Tim of Chicago, Illinois, his brothers Tom of Sheridan and Duane of Salem. He is further survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor should be made to Legacy Hospice in McMinnville. To leave online condolences, please visit www.macyandson.com.
