Mickey Patterson was my childhood friend. He and his parents lived just up the street from my family. I have some wonderful memories of Mickey and I will treasure them for the rest of my life.
Mickey died after a short illness at the age of 33 years old. His death was extremely difficult for his parents -- he was their only child.
After his death I sent his parents a sympathy card with this poem on the front. It expressed exactly how I was feeling about my friend and hoped it gave his parents some sort of comfort.
"A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it."
