Mr. Helm came as a young man to Gasconade county and located at Tea where he engaged in the blacksmith trade and where he was married October 28, 1884, to Miss Lizzie Mestemacher. Later they moved to Bern and still later to Owensville, where Mr. Helm followed his trade until poor health interfered.

Besides his wife and children he leaves two brothers, Charles of Clinton, MO, and Abe, of Japan, MO, and one sister, Mrs. Gusta Martin, also of Japan. Also one grandson.

He suffered for many months of cancer of the stomach and had been bedfast since January 1. He went to St. Louis during the summer for a surgical operation but nothing could be done for him and he came home to die. He gradually grew weaker until death relieved him from his pain about 6:00 o'clock Sunday evening.

Brief funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning at 10:00 o'clock after which the remains were conveyed to the Evangelical church were Rev. H. Specht delivered the funeral sermon in the presence of a large congregation gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. After the services the remains were conveyed to the St. Peter's cemetery northeast of town where the body was laid to rest.
